What type of chocolate is the healthiest?

When it comes to treats like chocolate, I believe it is more important to have the type that you enjoy the most, rather than try to look for healthier options.

My experience working with hundreds of clients of the years has proven that when you deprive yourself of what you crave, you will end up craving it more. In the same way, healthier substitutions may not satisfy your craving and you may end up eating more of it - removing any health benefits you were trying to achieve in the first place.

That being said, if you’re looking to try a healthier alternative to see if it works for you, here are my suggestions:

1. Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate is richer in antioxidants than milk chocolate, and is usually lower in sugar too. The higher the percentage of cacao, then more antioxidants the chocolate contains. Just keep in mind that it is also the cacao content that makes dark chocolate bitter.

2. Smaller portion sizes

It seems pretty obvious, but choosing a chocolate bar that is smaller in size will limit how much you can eat whilst still allowing you to enjoy the chocolatey goodness.

3. No sugar added

If you are watching your blood sugar levels, the no sugar added varieties could help to keep things in check. They often contain natural sweeteners such as stevia, however have comparable taste to the original.
